I just answered some of your questions/comments in the comment section. I wonder if I should get a commenting system like MckMama so I can just respond directly. Hm…

**Original post follows**
I haven’t really sewn much since college. But, since I’ve fallen in love with the Wonderland line from Moda fabric, I’ve been anxious to get the machine out and take it for a spin or two.

So, I made my way over to the Moda Bakeshop and found a tutorial to make this skirt. I had to make a few amendments so it would fit a 2-year-old, but within a few hours I managed to sew my way from this:

    >So Cute. I haven't forgotten you & the fabric that I am gathering together. I have been dealing with family things this week & probably will be so for a while. You may need to finish your rug without my donation, but you can always make more!

    >Awesome, beautiful skirt! I am sort of addicted to making cool skirts for girls too – funny since I have 4 boys! Did you use a pattern or just wing in? Is the sash attached?

    >I love your skirt you are so talented!! And the fabric is beautiful! Is it expensive? I would love to make a quilt for my kids with something like that :)

    >Quality fabric usually costs about $10 a yard and you can not get any really good quality fabric at JoAnn Fabrics. If you want to make something keepsake, go to a quilting shop and buy it. You will find this fabric in any quality quilt store. It will hold up well to the test of time – and cheap fabric will not. I learned that the hard way.

    >That came out GREAT! I'm printing the tutorial as I type. I'm going to have to make even smaller to fit my peanut! (is it bad if I also want one for me?)This looks like a great way to use up some scrap fabric, although I really love that Moda charm pack.

    >Kaira – Yes, the sash is attached. I didn't have a pattern, but I used this tutorial: http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/05/little-girls-patchwork-skirt.html

Lisa – The Wonderland line is actually no longer in production, though there are still some for sale here and there. You can get a charm pack (40 5"x5" pieces) on EBay for $8ish.

A great way to shop for nice fabric at a more reasonable price is to shop on Etsy.com and search designer cotton fabric in Supplies.

Becky – yeah, I suppose. I was just talking with my husband about selling skirts like this on Etsy. How much would you be willing to pay?

Cheri – so nice to meet you! I love hearing from first time commenters!

Molly – I made another one this afternoon for a 10 month old. I just used 1 row of squares instead of two, and only 5 across instead of 7. It turned out great! Oh, and I made the waistband strips 11" long instead of 13".

Hope that helps, y'all! Thanks for all the sweet comments!

    >I'm a ding dong. I was so busy looking at the pictures that I never read the post that CLEARLY stated where you got your pattern.

I love it. So cute. I'll be making this pattern soon.

    >Girl!! You are sooooo talented! We are definitely not alike in that area. My sister took all the creative, crafty genes from our pool. Selling them on Etsy, maybe? I would love to be one of your 1st customers. And, of course, I would need two! Let me know what you are thinking about price. Eeeee!!!!

PS – I worked on my honest scrap post for two hours tonight and I'm only half done! Hopefully I get it posted before the holiday. I might have to do it in two parts. But I have all 10 things on my honest scrap list, right here by my computer, ready to be typed about ;)

    >I love it!

Any suggestions for someone who wants to learn how to sew but has NO experience.

Someone gave me a sewing machine but I have really never used one. Learning to sew in on my list of things I want to learn to do someday.

    >Michelle – my best advice is to check with a Jo-Ann's or Michael's in your area (or something similar) to see if they offer sewing classes. Even one or two classes could teach you the basics of using your machine, following a pattern and so on. :)

    >This is super cute! Considering a future as an Etsy seller? This would be snapped up in a heartbeat. If I had a girl I would be all over making these cute outfits – the fabric that is available these days is just so adorable. Nice work!

    >I'd honestly pay whatever you'd charge! Ok, within reason I guess! I am a SAHM and we don't make much money!:) But again, honestly, I'm all about supporting other SAHM's and since I can't sew and don't really have the time, I'm happy to buy from you! You can't find anything like this in a store and I'd much rather help out a fellow Mommy than a store that imports from another country!:)

    >QUESTION… I want to make this skirt for my niece who is a 4t. Any ideas how I should adjust the pattern?

    Reply
  22. Kaira 7 July 2009 at 8:19 pm

    >Hannah,

Get a waist measurement and an idea of how long you want the skirt to be. Depending on desired fullness, you just adjust the width you create. A good rule of thumb for a kids skirt is twice as full. If you are using a very lightweight fabric you can add more fullness – up to 2.5 – 3 times the width (just as you would do for draperies). If you are using a heavier weight material you might only want a 1.5 width. For something like this I'd double the width. Make sure you account for seam allowances as well. Hope that helps.
