My Happy Place Just Got a Little Happier

Cartwheel Review

We visit Target about twice a week. More if we’re feeling stir crazy in the evening after dinner or if our homeschool mornings are getting long and need an interruption. Target has somehow become our (and I’m betting many of your) destination – our second location. So, when the lovely folks at BlogHer asked me to review and share the new Target Cartwheel app, I thought, An excuse to go to Target and use their discount app? No prob! I was headed there anyway!

And, if you haven’t already heard about Cartwheel, then read on – it’s happy!

So, this is my app – it’s a free download in the app store and you can connect it to your Facebook account (so you can see what your friends are saving) or register using your email address.

signin(will someone please tell my Groupon app to get a grip?)

The idea of Cartwheel is simple and you can use it two ways:
1. Browse the app (or the emails if you sign up for those) to see what’s on sale and pounce on the things that spark your interest, or
2. Go to Target with your shopping list, get what you need, and when you find a quiet moment in the store (for me, that’s usually in the Lego or Nerf aisle while the kids are doing their thing) and see what in your cart you can find coupons for.

I sort of do a combination of the two – but mostly I just search as I go, and sometimes other things spark my interest.

Example #1: Groceries I was planning to make Shauna Niequest’s enchilada recipe and needed a couple of cans of green chiles. I was glad to see they were on sale, but when I searched for them on my app (there are more than 700 offers at any given time), I saw that they were also a 5% off deal, so I added them to my Cartwheel. Happy little bonus!

Example #2: Towels As we made our way through the store, I came across a display of towels for testing and thought that, since they were on sale, it might be a good time to replace the towel from our master bathroom that had gone missing at the gym. I checked my app and got an extra 20% off – my $12.99 towel was now $8.80.

Example #3: Chambray and polka dots Okay, this was a total non-need. But, as we passed the little girls’ department on the way to the checkout I noticed a chambray and polka dot top that had Hazel’s name on it. $14.99 was more than I wanted to pay for it, but when I searched my app for “Cherokee”, I found a 25% off deal. You know, because cute.

polka dot and chambray

(Honestly, it makes me happy to find awesome discounts, but also a little sweaty. “25% off all Cherokee apparel”? What if I didn’t know about the app or forgot to check it – I’d be missing out on the near equivalent of an employee discount!)

Checking out with the app is like checking out at Starbucks (well, if you use the Starbucks app to checkout, I guess). Just hit the checkmark in the bottom corner of the screen at any time and it will produce a barcode that your cashier can scan. Any discounts you’ve saved in your Cartwheel that match what’s in your cart will automatically apply. Simple.

All told, I did pretty well! We have a Target debit RedCard, so they always shave another 5% off the top when I checkout – so between that and my Cartwheel savings, I did well!

I love cartwheel! I have saved money on little things that I have to buy (kids socks, laundry soap, paper towels), but I have saved even more on fun stuff- new Christmas lights, halloween costumes, and clothes!

I was told about cartwheel by an extremely friendly and helpful employee at target a few weeks ago…at first it annoyed me, because I would forget something I had added to my app. Then I started just searching for what was actually in my cart! Like you, target is our homeschool getaway, as well as our rainy day play date, and mommy happy place- and needless to say there are a lot of “non-needs” that make their way into our cart. But more often than not, I can get some sort of discount on one or more of them now…so that makes me happy…maybe I should do a celebratory cartwheel? :)

I have used it, but only once (since our closest Target is a piece aways). I wish I could use it more ;). It was a little hard to search for items. But I’m sure if I used it more I would get better at it!

Totally agree with that, Melissa! Honestly – I’m always worried that other shoppers are judging my as I stand with my cart pulled to the side, browsing deals and clicking. I’m sure they think I’m some sort of cell phone addict! good call to plan ahead at home!

I absolutely love the cartwheel app!! I always stock up on paper supplies, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, etc at the beginning of the year. By using the cartwheel app in combination with manufacturer coupons, target coupons, and my target debit card I saved tons!! And I agree…I find ANY excuse to make a trip to Target. Just ask my husband…or my mom, or my sister…heck my dog probably even knows! ;)

I used cartwheel while Christmas shopping after a polite employee taught me the basics. I passed the info on to my wife, who is our main Target addict. She uses cartwheel and her RedCard to stretch our dollars. The money we save makes it possible to splurge on those super cute (read as: rough, rugged and manly) clothes for our boys. In short, Cartwheel dominates.

I love the cartwheel app! Over Christmas I was killing it with the coupons on there! I also love that you can use in conjunction with manufacturers coupons, store coupons, AND your Target red card 5% savings. With the latest app update they added a barcode scanner in the search function. When I am searching for something specific to see if there is a coupon, it is super handy to just scan the barcode. BIG, big fan!!!!

I miss Target dearly. It is one of the things I miss most since leaving my mother and father to join my husband in this frozen wasteland. The cartwheel ap sounds fun, but we live in the dark ages with flip phones. I will admit that the $1000 gift card is what appeals to me most.

I am hesitant to use it because you use to have to sign in with your Facebook account. Then the things you purchased would be posted to Facebook sometimes. Is it still that way? If there were another way to sign in I would love to try it!

I have read that now there is an option where you can go on-line and print out your Cartwheel barcode prior to leaving for Target. You would just need to make sure you had added the offers needed for your shopping trip prior to printing the barcode. This is great for people who don’t have a smartphone because they can still utilize the Cartwheel app and get the extra savings!

This is the first that I have heard of Cartwheel. We use Target as a Wal-Mart replacement as there really aren’t any in our area, and even then trips to Target are limited to items that the grocery store doesn’t have or are more expensive at the grocery store. With Cartwheel, it might be worth it to make a few more trips to Target.

I loooooooove Cartwheel! I’ve saved $91.52 since I started using it. It is the easiest way to save extra on things that are on my list. Did I already say that I loooooooove it? ;)

One thing that I would add is that you can use a Cartwheel offer for only 4 of the same things per transaction. i.e. If you buy 5 boxes of granola bars in one transaction, only 4 of them will receive the Cartwheel savings. However, Cartwheel does allow multiple uses per day (I know that there is a limit, but blanking on what it is right now), so you can split items greater than 4 into more than one transaction. Might takes a few seconds more at the checkout to do two or three transactions, but worth it!

I *LOVE* this app! I had been looking at Target’s apothecary cabinet for awhile to use as bedside tables in our bedroom. They are chic and have ample amount of storage as well. Before the holidays, Target had a sale on all Threshold furniture, I believe they were 20% off, and on top of that, Cartwheel had another coupon for 10%!!!! The tables were $150 each- I ended up buying two of them and paying around $225 versus $300. AWESOME!!! I love that they usually match up in store sales with the Cartwheel sales!

The two times I’ve tried to use the app in-store, it didn’t work properly. First time, it wouldn’t even load. Second time, everything I scanned said no coupon available, even though I knew there was one for it, and it wouldn’t load deals for me to add manually. Very frustrating, but since it’s still in beta, I’m hoping it I’ll get better.

I don’t use the cartwheel app because I only heard of it here today. I am pretty committed to shopping off of a list and I hit up Target only for very specific things 90% of the time. It makes me all kinds of nervy to think about going out just to shop for non-specific items. I might download the app though before I go next time just to see, but something about 700 options popping up for green chilis sounds overwhelming to me.

    I. LOVE. MY. CARTWHEEL!! I’ve been using since the fall and I’ve saved at least $60.00 just on the app. I love seeing my amt go down after the Cartwheel scan and then when I use my Red Card next. Target is our “second location” as well! I mainly go through my grocery list at home and then check the app for anything on my list, I always have a few things that I keep on no matter what: Milk, Up&Up diapers, Huggies Wipes. Sometimes they expire but they are usually available right away, I think they do that to keep you coming back and checking. I’m up to 21 spaces now on my Cartwheel and I usually save 3-4 of them for last minute things that I may grab but aren’t on my list, (like the Cherokee 25% off). All in all, it has become one of the most used apps on my phone and it gives me more reasons that I don’t even need to love Target! My son calls it “mommy’s store”! The only thing that makes me sweaty at this point is thinking about what I would use a $1,000 Target giftcard for.

I have the app but half the time I forget to use it until I’m halfway out the door! Target is the only place my boys won’t fuss about going to when I mention shopping!

I love my Cartwheel app! The only thing that makes me sweaty about it is when one of my kids shouts loudly at the checkout (or worse, in front of my husband or mother in law!), “WOW! Mom, you’ve already saved $133 using this?? Didn’t you just start using it a couple of months ago??” :-)

LOVE it! I am up to nearly $200 in savings with the app, and I have not bought any big ticket items or large quantities of anything. I just use it each week on groceries and other needs and have been using it for several months now, and the savings have been adding up. Totally worth it!!!

I love the Cartwheel app! I use it every time I shop there, which, let’s be honest, is a lot. There’s always something in my buggy that I can find a discount for. And it’s easy to use! I would absolutely not waste my time if it weren’t so easy.

I use cartwheel often & in addition to the target mobile coupons & my red card! I always used it before Mali was born, but occasionally I get distracted & forget. I’m always bummed when I realize I’ve forgotten.

I do like the app because I always to like save more money! But I do get a little sweaty wondering what I missed. And, it seems like the things I buy that are in cartwheel are mostly in the 5% range and the total savings are small, like .46 off of my last visit of $30. I am a little disappointed in it thus far.

I’ve yet to try it out because I have not made the trip to our nearest target store; i will put it through its paces when I shop next; looks like a fun app to save money with.

The Cartwheel app has inspired me to do more of my grocery shopping at Target. I can stack discounts with it, my Red Card and manufacturer’s coupons! I usually browse through it at home, after I’ve created my list, and inevitably the list grows :)

I have the app, and I occasionally browse and save coupons on there, but since I don’t grocery shop at Target, I don’t end up actually NEEDING anything I’m looking at. Our tight budget doesn’t allow for many splurges, even if they are discounted! Someday I’ll use the app, though! If I won, I would shop Target clothes to my heart’s content!

I’ve been using Carwheel for awhile and love it. I usually take a few minutes in my car before heading into Target and check out all the offers. Any that I think I might use, I add to my list. Love all the grocery offers!

I use it and love it! I almost always buy the same things at Target so just keep the ones for milk, cheese, organic baby puffs, cereal, etc in my cartwheel. They recently had 10% off diapers and wipes and then could have saved an extra 5% if I had used my Red Card. I didn’t take advantage of that deal, but it was a great one! I love watching what I’ve saved at the end and it’s been a big blessing to our family. Go Target!

Have you seen all the cute valentines day goodies? And I cleaned up last week in the clothing department! Between cartwheel and the clearance sales it was retail therapy at its best!

I LOVE Cartwheel! I have saved over $50 since I started using it. My favorite way to use it – to avoid overspending – is to do all of the shopping I need (although don’t we all buy more than we “need” at Target?!) and then scan everything in my cart to see what items have savings available on Cartwheel. Love Target! :)

I LOVE the cartwheel app. Its a fun game to try stack cartwheel with target/manufactures coupons. Add in the Redcard discount and 5 cents for every re-useable bag and its possible to get some GREAT deals!
The best is when the cashier notices an item that has a cartwheel coupon that you overlooked!

I’m still getting accustomed to the Cartwheel app, but my best score so far was getting 25% off the perfect curtains for my new baby girl’s nursery, on top of the 15% sale that was going on at the time. Those same curtains are now on clearance, but the Cartwheel/sale price I paid was less than the current clearance price. Total win!
