field day

Among the busyness of working and writing and meeting and app-building, our family has managed to enjoy a good bit of “normal” around here lately. The weather has warmed up (it was over 80 degrees here yesterday!) and we’ve been walking on the trail in the woods behind our house nearly every day.

Yesterday morning was delightfully typical. My sister came over with her giant, white great dane (Bess) and my mom’s great dane puppy (Charlie, who they watch during the day). And with six kids, three dogs, a dozen rubber boots, and nets and insect cages and walking sticks and fruit smoothies and camping chairs we set out for a morning of hiking and playing in the creek.

Oliver and Beatrice are both seven now, so we try to give them a little more freedom than the littles. They waded in the creek, caught water bugs with their net, and even managed to catch a snake (pretty sure it’s a baby queen snake – nonvenomous) to the delight and terror all of us. And while they were busy adventuring, we took the littles to an open field to run and adventure and explore on their own terms.

The dogs ran and wrassled and chewed on sticks.

The sun was bright and warm and gave us all a much-needed thawing.

Normal is nice. Analog is wonderful. Rubber boots and snakes and enormous fields of green grass and sunshine and adventurous kids are the best kind of soul food.

And even if my only proof of our field day is a few iPhone snaps and a dozen pink shoulders – I’m just so glad it happened!

field day collageHappy Wednesday, friends!

Is it warming up in your necks of the woods as well?

The level of respect for getting that close to the snake AND taking a picture!!!!? Wow! Yeah that level just went through the roof. I know, seriously? I just can’t do snakes! Can’t! Good job!

Oooh, I love snakes. Now, that is my idea of a perfect day right there! I am desperate to find a creek for my kids to play in not too far from home this summer. There must be something around here!

No… it’s getting cold in my neck of the woods :( Pouring with rain outside at the moment and Autumn is settling in. I can’t believe you got that close to a snake!!! I would be freaking out. I can’t even look at the picture for too long haha. Looks like you all had a lovely day together :)
