Yesterday, I was an Apothecary.

The kids and I spent yesterday afternoon with my friend Melissa at her shop, The Village Apothecary in Leiper’s Fork.

(What does that make us? Chemists? Alchemists? Apothecarys? Wikipedia was only semi-helpful…)

Because of Melissa, I’ve developed a happy relationship with the world of organic skincare – particularly when it comes to developing new recipes! She knows so much about the science behind the smells and herbs and things (she has degrees, I just have fluffy ideas), and from time to time she will super graciously invite me to come play in her test kitchen, right off of the main room of her adorable shop.

A month or so ago she asked me if I’d like to come play with a body butter and salt scrub recipe she was perfecting. She thought it might be fun to let me develop the scent profile. (I told you she was a gracious friend!).

Back in October we played for hours with ratios and essential oils and things. Then for several weeks we took home test jars to see what worked and what didn’t. (It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.) At first our scrub was awesome at the kitchen sink, but it lost its “scrubbiness” a little too quickly in the shower. And the first time we made the body butter, we noticed the shea butter became a little gritty after a few days.

It was super fun to work out the kinks together (and to keep testing the yummy testers!!). Now our scrub is made with dead sea salt and has just the perfect amount of “scrubbiness” in the shower too. And we found that the body whip sets up beautifully in the jar if we changed just a few steps in the production process. I am such a nerd for this kind of stuff!

So. Yesterday was officially production day! I took the kids to the shop with me (this totally counts as homeschooling… right?) and while Hazel played kitty-cat shop keeper, Melissa and I made magic with all of her organic ingredients in the kitchen!

Village Apothecary 1 Village Apothecary 2The scent that we finally decided on is just heavenly. I want to be buried in it. It’s got its fair share of peppermint oil in it, but it also has a delicious off-setting hint of coconut. And because it’s not overly Christmassy, we landed on the scent name “coconut mint”.

AND, I installed a plugin for this post that makes it so you can scratch and sniff the screen to smell it – go ahead, try it!

I kid.

(Ryan told me that joke would tank – please tell me that was funny to somebody?)

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you all that:
A) That was super fun – Melissa is a great friend!
B) If you want to try it, our happy little collaboration of products is available for sale for the first time today!
C) I’m really blessed to get to donate my share of the proceeds to the people of Guatemala who captured my heart back in August, by way of Food for the Hungry.
D) Melissa also said I could offer y’all free shipping with no minimum with code “RAECHEL” at checkout.
E) Order by December 18th for guaranteed Christmas delivery!
F) I get to give a set away! Simply enter using the giveaway widget below.

I recently started using the argon oil and I am blown away by the results!!! I LOVE it! I have been wanting to try argon oil, but every retailer was selling at such expensive prices! Village Apothecary has it for a very reasonable price! I’m one happy customer!!!
