No, I did not just have a baby.

Boy, this has been quite a week! As I may have mentioned (I honestly can’t remember where/when I alluded to this, but I think I did at some point), my across-the-street neighbors were expecting twins. She was due May 15th, but because of some pregnancy complications, the babies were delivered early (33+ weeks) by emergency c-section this past Saturday. Totally unexpected, caught us all pretty unprepared.

They’re teeny, but healthy. Jack Burgess weighed 3lb 15oz at birth, and Evelyn Rebecca weighed 4lb 15oz.

Teeny.

At least compared to my own moose babies, Oliver and Hazel (8-1 and 8-11, respectively).

So, the important news is that Jonie and Chris and the babies are all doing great, thanks be to God! And the second most important news is that

I’m an across-the-street-auntie!!!

To be fair, I probably should have been more clear about what was happening when I shared these photos on Instagram and my Facebook page yesterday.

I got a handful of “are you expecting?” and “did you use a surrogate??” questions. It’s really my fault. My captions included the phrases “our Jack” and “Miss Evelyn ate 20mL for me”. So yes, unclear.

But now that we’re all on the same page – and now that everyone is moved into the step-down NICU and improving daily, we can be excited that these much-anticipated babes are here and cute and leetle.

I actually had the privilege of driving up to the hospital on Sunday after Easter service to take some photos as Mama and Daddy visited their babies and actually, as Jonie saw and touched her children for the first time. It was a holy moment. I hid behind my camera most of the time.

It’s probably safe to bet that this isn’t the last you’ll be seeing of these two nuggets on my blog. I’m a little enamored. And man, once we get them home, I’m going to be wanting to photograph them in every fool pea pod, basket and enormous flower I can find. (Any suggestions on places to find awesome newborn photo props??)

reunited1Hugs and kisses and a happy Thursday to you, friends!
(And thank you for so many of the kind and encouraging words yesterday.
So grateful for you all!)

xoxo, Raechel

I’ve been following your blog for a while (I think at least 4 years) and just found out the weekend of Jonie’s shower that you’re neighbors. Not sure exactly how it came up, I may have mentioned your blog. Anyways, it would have been surreal to actually meet you, blogging makes the world small. Jonie and I went to high school together and she was a HUGE encouragement to me as I was undergoing fertility treatments. I’m so jealous that you’ve seen them and I can’t wait to see all the gorgeous pics you post of them!

Congrats to them and so happy all are well. Our twins were born on January 27 at 33 weeks and those photos brought me back to those few weeks in the NICU. Hope those babies grow nice and big soon and can join your fun street of neighbors!

Awe. I have a special place in my heart for tiny twins.. tugs the mama heart strings.
Our first born are twins, also born at 33+ wks.. and quite a surprise, as we’d only found out a day & a half before that I was carrying two.
Our Mason was 4# 13oz, and Eric followed two minutes later at 5# 1oz. They were tiny, coming home at 4.5 pounds.. felt like holding all blanket! But Eric, who was in the NICU for 2 wks, was a BIG boy compared to some of those other NICU babes.
They are fifteen now, bigger than me, learning to drive, having to shave, growing to be good young men.
If only 15 years ago we had digital photography like we’ve got it now!
    These photos are a treasure!

Oh man, leeeeetle babies are the sweetest! I just shot boy/girl preemie twins today (they were born at 34w)…so sweet. They were older (just now able to get home from the hospital, so they were 4 weeks), and difficult, but so sweet. Hope your sessions with them go well! I frequent antique shops for fun buckets/baskets, and even occasionally Hobby Lobby or Target will have some sort of fun prop-ish container. OH and Overstock. Just search asian bucket. For blankets/fabric to lay the baby on…Target has those great cable-knit blankets right now that work well, or just check a local fabric shop for apparel fabrics. Happy to share specific sites for some things, too, just email me :)

Ahhhh! this brings back so many memories! i have 17 mo old twin boys who were born at 32 weeks (2 lb 15 oz and 4 lb 5 oz) – I didn’t get to see my babes for the first twelve hours -so i can completely relate to that part. it was so hard – but so so sweet to hold them FINALLY.

it is awesome that you live across the street! i’m sure you will be a huge, huge blessing. my mother-in-law works right next door to our house and it was always so nice when she just popped over to rock a babe or unload my dishwasher :)

I am another good friend of Chris’s Mother, Brenda. Chris and my son, Matthew lived next door to each other for 3 years when they were both toddlers. I’m so amazed at pictures of these precious babies and to see Chris as a Daddy. I loved him as a little red-headed boy full of smiles and mischief. Take good care of them and share lots of pictures on your blog. I too blog at http://grandmamasstories.blogspot.com. I am a quilter and grandmother of 5 and that’s the main topics of my blog. I’m thrilled to discover your blog and hope you may find time to visit me one day soon. Take good care of the new little family across the street.
    Blessings
