the baby of the family

While we were away in Michigan, my sister sent me this photo:

Yes, that’s a great dane puppy. Yes, she’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen (well, after my own offspring, of course). And yes, she’s about to get HUGE!!!

So, our first order of business upon returning to fair Franklin was to snuggle that puppy while she’s still a puppy! (but seriously, she’s going to get big, folks.)

She’s 8 weeks old today. Her name is Bess. And I love her for many reasons – not the least of which is the fact that I get to love her without the potty-training, chewing and barking that comes with actually being the owner of a giant animal. Yay, me!

So, this is our newest baby. She still sleeps more than she’s awake and has puppy breath and a soft pink nose. Pardon me… I need to get back to snuggling now…

Happy Tuesday, friends! Have you seen this week’s SheReadsTruth memory verse yet? It’s a goodie!

My brother bought our parents a Great Dane puppy when we all moved out :) Miss Darcy was huge but always thought she was a lap dog. She adored all the grandkids and my Mama was heartbroken when she died last year; Darcy was almost ten years old which is old for a Great Dane. Now, Mama has a sweet little wirehaired Dachshund named Charlotte…do you see the Jane Austen theme ;)
Can’t wait to see more pictures of Bess as she grows!

Not to be a downer but as a former Dane Rescuer please make sure she has the pup’s hearing & vision tested. Many times a white dane w/blue eyes will be blind or deaf. Blindness would probably be obvious at this point but deafness can be hidden for a while. Other than that enjoy that baby, they are one of the best breeds ever!

So cute! We have a Harlequin Great Dane named Diefenbaker – he’s awesome. He wants to be a lap dog so bad, he sits with is bum on me and his feet on the floor. I actually just posted a pic to my site’s facebook page today of him sleeping with my daughter’s doll. (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=463877800298667&set=a.423573974329050.105078.409334085753039&type=1&theater) He thinks dolls make great pillows.
They are the best dogs and have so much personality while still being really gentle with kids (just watch out for the tail). Love that she’s all white!

so cute! i had a dane for a while and she was white with one blue eye and one brown and a pink nose. just as a heads up, this combo often is linked to deafness, so if she has trouble training, that may be the reason! give some extra slack. not that it will be difficult- she is so adorable!

    Oh, she is just darling!
We have a collie who is white with blue eyes, so just as a little mention, some dogs that have that colouring are deaf, or have partial hearing. I successfully trained Bailey using hand communication so it is possible just takes a little extra time!

      Hey Samantha!
Yes, Bess is deaf in one ear! They are ready to learn how to love & train a dog with a little bit of a disability. And like you, I think they’ll figure it out! Funny – I didn’t know that was a thing until we had Bess!

        Raechel,
They are super special, and Bailey was such a cuddly puppy because of it. Much cuddlier than my retriever is!
They find the hand actions for things like “sit”, “lie down” and “come” are good for her when she is out of her hearing range, rather than just aiming for her good ear.
You should be able to find some puppy classes that will help with that or otherwise there are plenty of websites out there! As long as you’re consistant with the signs, she’ll catch on super quick! She’s a girl too so she’ll likely be less stubborn!

As a mom to a 7-year old brindle Great Dane…they are truly wonderful! So sweet and don’t know their own size, but very good with kids and protective of his house to strangers. Enjoy her! Very shortly her head will be as big as she is right now!
